ITANAGAR, Nov 5: The Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu informed that state government has signed memorandum of understanding with power proponents to harness 19000 Megawatts of power in the state earning close to Rs 900 crores for the state exchequer.
He informed this on the third day of the first session of the fifth legislative assembly today on motion of thanks on Governor’s Address.

Markio Tado also spoke on the need of road infrastructure and equitable development while Dr Tangor Tapak called for specialized health services along with improvement in primary health sector.
Thangham Wangham drew the attention of drug problem in the state. He said that Tirap, Changlang, Lohit, Anjaw need special attention from the government to deal with drug related problems.
He further called for promotion of sports activities, which was echoed by Jambey Tashi.
Bamang Felix, disagreed with the government’s decision to communatise education in the state. He said that an education policy needs to be in place.
Kamlong Mossang spoke on the need to connect Vijaynagar by road. He said that people of Vijaynagar still struggle for basic necessity because of lack of road networks.

The third day of the session was a whole day affair as many speakers irrespective of party affiliation choose to take part in the debate. This was a departure from the usual scene as earlier members choose to keep mum most of the times, even after Speaker sets aside time for discussion on important bills. Cutting across party lines, first timers and experienced ones took part in the discussion at times even questioning the government why some areas were not covered by the governor in his speech.

ITANAGAR, Nov5: “Development and environment is two complete things. For the sake of development we can’t destroy our ecology,” noted environmentalist and Padma Vibhushan Sunder Lal Bahugana during the interaction on Thursday talking about coming up of many hydropower dams in Arunachal Pradesh. For him every development work carried out in the rural belt should benefit local people. He urged people of this state to understand repercussion of various hydropower dam which are being proposed to build across the state.
“In the near future if ever a war breaks out between two countries it would be on water issue’ he added. Popular for his staunch opposition to Tehri Dam project and for leading Chipko movement, he is in Itanagar as part of his Himalayan tour to create awareness about fast evaporating glaciers. The 84 year old is still enthusiastic while talking about environmental issues, which is so dear to him.
He is planning to tour all the Himalayan belt area to sensitize people about the need to safeguard ecology. His new campaign under the name of “Save Himalaya, Save Water, and Save Life Movement” will take him to entire Himalayan region. “Himalaya is one of the most fragile mountains of earth and it should be endeavor of people living under this mountain to maintain its beauty,” told Mr Bahuguna. He also suggested that solar energy should be properly tapped and believes it can in many fill some of energy needs.

During the interaction, Bamang Tago of Arunachal Citizen Front shared his view of
environmental problem that plagues the state. “The construction of these dams sure
is major ecological problem. But bigger than this is Jhoom cultivation issue. As
long as an alternative to Jhoom cultivation is not found, trees will be felled leading
to more environmental problem,” shared Bamang Tago. He asked people of state to wake

Meanwhile Bahuguna called on the Governor Gen JJ Singh at Raj Bhavan today. The hour-
Bahuguna, while appreciating the initiatives and efforts of the Governor towards environment preservation called for his good office in creating more awareness on it and on plantation programme of selected tree species, which Gen Singh readily agreed to take up with State Environment and Forest minister. Bahuguna further suggested on ropeway instead of roadway as many trees are fell in the process.
Citing that Arunachal Pradesh has 82% forest cover, Gen Singh said disallowing of felling trees for roads will be a hindrance to the development in the interior and border areas of the State. We cannot be weight along with Haryana, Punjab and Maharashtra, where the forest cover is below 15%. Moreover, we are in the process of increasing our green cover. Wherever there is felling of trees, double the numbers are planted elsewhere clear areas, he pointed.
Later the environmentalist and his entourage toured the Raj Bhavan, appreciating the green cover, the wooden hornbill cottage, organic vegetable garden and the orchidoriums.
Later, Bahuguna called on the state Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu in his office chamber today.
Initiating a discussion with the environmentalist, Chief Minister informed that Arunachal Pradesh has been protecting the vast forest cover and maintaining the greenery of the state. In this away the state is also playing a vital role towards checking and reducing the global warming which has become a vital threat for mankind and flora and fauna, the chief minister pointed out and advocated for compensation to the tribal people most of who are largely depends on forest for sustenance.

IFCSAP to accord warm welcome to Dalai Lama
ITANAGAR, Nov 5: Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) decided to accord warm welcome to spiritual leader The Dalai Lama on his arrival at State Capital on November 14.
Meanwhile, IFCSAP strongly objected to China’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh. “Arunachal Pradesh had neither historic and cultural link with China”, it said while appealing the Central Govt to be assertive while reacting to China’s claim. The society extended its support and solidarity to the movement initiated by All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union on the issue.

Reiterating the stand of the APCC on the repeated China’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh, Rajkumar said Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu had already denounced China’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh and made it clear that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and will not part with an inch of its land.
The view and stand of the APCC on this issue is same with the Centre, Rajkumar said and added that India had several rounds of bilateral talks with the China to solve the border issue. Dialogue would continue but India would not succumb to any kind of threat, he added.
Governor advocates rural entrepreneurship
ITANAGAR, Nov 5: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen JJ Singh, exhorted the villagers to venture into entrepreneurship through village and cottage industries, at Poma village, near Itanagar today. He said this while on a visit to the Poma Bamboo Processing Centre (BPC), a pilot project which has been set up under his initiatives.
It is set up to show the rural communities a path towards financial empowerment through utilization of abundant forest products. He said that when there is buyback arrangement for its product from the BPC already in place, quality produce of highest order should be eunsred. Citing that now name of Poma Village is known through out the world via Internet because of the BPC, he urged upon them to work hard to ensure it meet more than its objectives. We are using bamboo; therefore, we should also carry out bamboo plantation, to ensure that cycle is maintained. Moreover, it should be of the species on demand, Gen Singh added. He appreciated Forest department for carrying out two hectors of bamboo plantation in the area.
Further encouraging the villagers to taken up floriculture, horticulture, fishery, bee keeping, the Governor invited them to visit Raj Bhavan to see for themselves that these sectors have the potential.
Highlighting on development programme of the state government, the governor informed that now whatever work is taken up in the area would be of highest quality as the State government has introduced unique system of ‘Third Party Monitoring’. He went to advise the villagers on proper sanitation in the village and emphasized on organic farming. Pointing plastic as enemy of the environment, Gen Singh once again educated the people on it.
Speaking on the occasion, newly elected local MLA Nabam Rebia expressed gratitude to the Governor for his farsighted effort in the development of rural areas particularly the Poma area. Referring Gen Singh as the People’s Governor, Rebia said, because of his concern for the people, he enjoys love and affection from all. Never in the past, Governor went to the villages and interacted with rural population. Assuring to work under the guidance of the Governor, he urged upon the people preserve the green surrounding as it will become a tourist attraction in the future. The rivers, he stressed, should be free from plastic and there should be no hunting for at least for three years from this day.
Poma ASM Techi Anna highlighted on the progress of the BPC. She also cited some problems like power supply and late deliveries of machines. Circle Officer Kiron Ningo and Head Gaon Burah Tacha Markha also spoke on the occasion.
State First Lady Anupama Singh, Chief Engineer (Power) Er. Jumtum Tato, Papum Pare ADC T. Kaye and district heads of work departments were present on the occasion amongst others.
Earlier, the first couple and the guests inspected the working of the BPC and saw some local handicraft produces. As encouragement, the Governor bought some items like Bamboo mugs. He advised them to keep some more indigenous produces such as wooden statues from Tirap, caps from Kurung Kumey, shawl from Ziro in the Curio Shop, set up attached to the BPC. Governor to lay foundation of RIWATCH campus
ITANAGAR, Nov 05: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen (Retd) J J Singh would lay the foundation stone of the Research Institute of World’s Ancient Traditions, Cultures & Heritage (RIWATCH) at Iduli Village on the outskirts of Roing, Lower Dibang Valley on Nov 7, informed its project director Vijay Swami in a release today.
MP Mukut Mithi, MLAs Laeta Umbrey and Jamin Tayeng would be the guests of honour on the occasion.
RIWATCH is an Affiliated unit of International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS), Pennsylvania, USA. The basic objective of RIWATCH is to cater to the needs of research scholars in studying different ethnic groups of North east India and initiate comparative and cross cultural studies of various ethnic groups of different countries with that of India in general and north east India in particular. It will also facilitate young scholars from North east India to have opportunities of cross cultural studies in foreign countries and vice versa. This will ultimately result in Scholar Exchange Programmes with different higher educational institutions of the world, the release said.
The local people have contributed 10 hectors of land, free of cost, at Iduli Village. The contributor of the land is Dature Miuli of Iduli Village, Lower Dibang Valley, said the release.
Mortal remains of K.D.’s mother consigned to flames

ITANAGAR, Nov 05: The mortal remains of Savitri Devi, mother of state election commissioner KD Singh, were consigned to flames at Laluk crematorium in neighbouring Assam amidst chanting of hymns on Thursday.
Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, whom Singh served as a principal secretary, also visited the latter’s official residence here this morning to pay his last respects.
Well wishers and close friends, including top ranking bureaucrats, police and forest officers also paid their last respects to the late octogenarian, before her mortal remains covered with flowers were taken away for cremation.
Hundreds of well wishers present at the crematorium consoled Singh, who was shocked at the loss of his mother. However, they were unanimous that a crematorium with basic infrastructure was very essential in the Capital Complex which is speedily attaining the status of a mini metropolitan city.

Declare results on merit basis
ITANAGAR, Nov 05: The Graduate Unemployed Youth Welfare Association (GUYWA) Capital Complex has requested the tourism director not to succumb to the political pressure or pressure from higher authority and declare the interview results of the group C and D posts strictly on merit basis.

While the candidates are still looking out for the results for the posts of tourism information officers’ interview for which was held in February 2008, the department also made appointment to the posts of TIOs without declaring the pending results, GUYWA further alleged.

NERIST impress UGC
ITANAGAR: The University Grant Commission (UGC) expert committee was highly impressed by the achievements of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) and said that the institute has become a centre of higher study in engineering and science.
The UGC committee headed by Prof. JV Prabhakra Rao, vice chancellor, Rayala Seema University recently visited NERIST and assessed the performance and progresses.
The institute, after attaining deemed university status in 2005, achieved major milestones under the leadership of Dr. Joram Begi as director. The first convocation of the institute, Silver Jubilee celebration, revision of syllabi, inclusion of PG/Doctoral programme in every department, enhancement of intake capacity of APST students in the institute was worth mentioning among others, the report said.
